5. Melinda Doolittle (again)...gets a viewer question. What is the first tape she bought? Answer: Michael Jackson, "Bad." And her mom crossed it out and put "Good." Yeah right.
Song: "How Do You Mend a Broken Heart"
Me: In the mentoring segment, we learn she's omitted a line about losing. Because she wants to win "Idol." You wouldn't tell with this performance, though. It's OK, but not even up to par vocally. Again, it lacks the proverbial "wow" factor, with the exception of a strong series of notes toward the end. I'm not crazy about Melinda tonight. She's boring, and I think the judges are underestimating how much that could hurt her. Good singing alone doesn't win this competition.
Randy: "Much better. Great song."
Paula: "Remember that sometimes vocal isn't all of it."
Simon: "I think the second half of that song has put you into the semifinals."
Score: 6/10
