final 3: syesha mercado

Choice adjectives: Underdog, belter, Broadway-bound

Why she could win: She's stayed around this long after being named by many fans the first of the Top 12 to go home. While she's held a consistent spot in the bottom two, an unexpectedly large fan base has kept her safe. And some say it's justifiable. Syesha's improved substantially in recent weeks, turning out performances driven equally by vocals and theatrics.

Why she couldn't: It appears as if the Davids have significantly larger fan bases -- they've both avoided the bottom 3 all season. Despite recent successes, she's a singer who seems much more fit for the stage, and the likelihood of her occupying a unique niche in the recording industry is low. There's also Syesha's on-stage presence, which at times comes off conceited or just plain distant.

Scandal? Some fans think she's occupying a spot that should have gone to singers who were prematurely ousted from the competition. And like Archuleta, she's appeared on a reality TV talent competition -- ABC's failed "The One."

Advice for tonight: Sing, but don't talk. No amount of explaining could justify an attempt to compare AI's magnitude to that of the civil rights movement.
