hungry eyes?

As much as people say Stephanie's elimination was a surprise (more on that later), I think as usual there's more buzz about the fact that Sanjaya's sticking around for another week.

That means he's earned a spot on this summer's AI tour, which of course has caused inevitable speculation over a possible Sanjaya win.

For the record, I don't think that'll ever happen. There's always at least one contestant who sticks around longer than usual due to either a Vote for the Worst endorsement or merely viewer intrigue.

And personally, if one singer sticks around unneccessarily, I'd rather it be Sanjaya than Phil or even Gina. Sanjaya's the kind of guy you love to hate -- even if you don't like his performances, he offers an almost guaranteed creep factor and/or level of unpredictability. Whereas Phil and Gina are just blah.

That's why news of this woman's hunger strike amuses me. A 23-year-old AI fan from New York, she claims she won't eat until Sanjaya is voted off the show. Um, R.I.P.

What if Sanjaya wins? It'll probably have a minor impact on the show's credibility, but people will keep watching. If nothing else, they'll want to see if future seasons can ensure another loser.

In reality, though, Sanjaya will likely just hang around another couple weeks. I see him placing sixth or fifth. And sure, that's not entirely fair, but AI -- and Hollywood in general -- isn't solely about talent. It's about making a fan connection, and if singers aren't aware of that fact, they don't deserve to stick around.
