where is It?

Not even 24 hours after the eight remaining male contestants offered up another night of lackluster performances, the Web is already overflowing with comments suggesting this season lacks evidence of the elusive "It" factor.

"It" is a factor that extends far beyond the realm of talent..."It" pertains to something that make audience members -- a lot of them -- connect with a certain contestant, whether or not he or she goes on to win.

I don't think we've seen that this season, either.

Did Taylor Hicks set the bar too high? By his current album sales, no. But his seizure-inspired dance moves and honest, yet quirky, personality were enough to ignite "Soul Patrol" fever. No singer has demonstrated that sort of appeal in the show's sixth season.

Instead, we have a female group composed primarily of R&B, Aretha-inspired belters, some of whom are even quite talented. They just don't offer anything new. Or even exciting. And as for the guys, I'm sticking to my assertion that Blake Lewis is the only one worth watching. But by virtue of his risk taking and creativity, not his vocal talents.

Speaking of the guys...Sundance Head managed last night to garner another endorsement from Vote for the Worst, so it'll be interesting to see if he manages to stick around. The site, which encourages visitors to vote for bad performances in hopes of sabotaging the show's outcome, is billing Sundance as a reincarnation of Season 4's Scott Savol.

God help us.

I'm interested in hearing your comments. Is there an "It" I'm missing?

yeah i guess you have a good theory but did Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood have anything SPECIAL about them that separated them from the other pop singers? No. They were run-of-the-mill, Christina Aguilera/Faith Hill type singers. So I don't think that always wins the competition.

I wonder why people continue to make AI the #1 show if they refuse to go out and buy the CDs of the stars that they, as a country, make. Kelly Clarkson, the first and really only true American Idol (since the pool was so much bigger way back then) has been the only really successful one (ok, Carrie's an exception)... so maybe it's time for AI to throw in the towel.
